The Masonic Temple building was constructed around 1917 by the Masons who used primarily the third and fourth floors for their activities. The ground level of the building contains retail and banking space. The 6,000 square foot space at the corner of Marin and Virginia Streets was formerly occupied by Bayview Federal Bank and Independence Savings and still has a vault, safety deposit boxes and a night deposit box. The second level on the Virginia Street side contains 14 office spaces, including the offices of the Butterfly Gardeners Association and Musicians & Fine Artists for World Peace.

There is a grand entrance with a 20 by 20 foot stairway leading to the third floor which contains three large spacious rooms used for performing arts, exhibitions, weddings, banquets and concerts. A full size 16 by 26 foot commercial kitchen can be used for food preparations or catering for affairs.
On the forth floor, on both the Marin and Virginia Street sides are 12 studio type residential units.

The building is of double brick wall construction with steel columns. The roof is flat tar and gravel and was replaced in 1998.
There is a large central boiler for hot water and heat. The foundation is mostly of brick with some concrete at the basement level. The flooring is old growth fir and hemlock. Hand carved mahogany door frames, hand painted stenciling, and plaster molding can be found throughout the building. Many of the original doors and light fixtures are still in the building and several large 1914 chandeliers can l be found in the performing arts rooms.

During various remodeling projects from 1994 through 1999, the building was retrofitted for earthquake protection and a new centralized fire alarm system and electrical system was installed.
